Latest News: The Margam Estate – Timeline (Bronze / Iron Age – Present)

Sir Rice Mansel (1487-1559) Sir Rice Mansel Era (1487-1559) – In 1537 after the dissolution of the monastic establishment by King Henry VIII, Margam Abbey was bought by Sir Rice Mansel (1487-1559) of Oxwich Castle, Gower Peninsular & Old Beaupre, Vale of Glamorgan. He had a Tudor mansion built out of and on the former monastic ranges of the Abbey with the Abbey’s stone buildings adapted, elaborated & extended over 200 years. The house was later remodelled in the late 16th century by Sir Thomas Mansel.

The project is owned by Mr Rob Bowen & is operated as a not for profit organisation known as Kenfig.org Local Community Group. The group is registered & has full membership with Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO). The Kenfig.org Local Community Group has received grant funding for the project through BAVO from both the Welsh Government & Bridgend County Borough Council.

National Library of WalesThe website received formal recognition in 2005 by the National Library of Wales & was identified as ‘An important part of Wales’ documentary heritage’ where it was requested to be archived as part of the National Library’s permanent collections. http://www.kenfig.org.uk is being archived for posterity in the National Library’s permanent collections under licence from its copyright owner, Mr Rob Bowen.

Bridgend Heritage NetworkThe website is heavily used by local education networks throughout South Wales & around the World for its online specialist in-depth information on Kenfig’s rich & colourful history. The Kenfig.org Local Community Group which is responsible for the website http://www.kenfig.org.uk is a member of the Bridgend Heritage Network which was established in Feb 2012 following a heritage conference by the Bridgend History & Heritage Steering Group (Bridgend County Borough Council, REACH – Rural Development Programme).
